Lecture at KU

Lecture at KU

Lawrence, KS—Last Thursday, we had the honor of speaking to about 200 design students at the University of Kansas. DesignEgg was one of seven projects/artists invited each semester to share their work as part of the Hallmark Symposium Series.

About the Series
The Hallmark Symposium Series was established in 1984 through the generosity of the Hallmark Corporate Foundation with the goal and intention of enriching the education of students at the University of Kansas and in support of those in particular in the Department of Design through exposure to designers, artists and educators from the United States and abroad. During these nearly 30 years of collaboration, approximately 10,000 students have been exposed to these rich and various array of practitioners.

We drove about 11 hours from Kentucky (with a brief stop in Columbia, MO) before arriving in Lawrence, Kansas, a great college town and a liberal stronghold in a largely conservative state. On the afternoon we arrived, we checked into the hotel and spent most of the day going over our notes and refining our presentation, which would last about 45 minutes. It included 14 pages of text and 100 slides! I guess we had a lot to say about DesignEgg:)

For our fall fundraiser, DesignEgg enlisted the help of more than 35 of our favorite artists and brands who donated pottery, jewelry, outdoor gear, gift certificates, and more our to an online auction. From October 5-25, 90 bids were placed and 43 people won some terrific items, which were then shipped directly from the artist/retailer. “Support DesignEgg. Get Something Special.” was the tagline for this creative online event that raised almost $3,500 for community-funded design!

Chicago Fundraiser

Chicago Fundraiser

Chicago, IL—A year ago, we wrapped up a successful Kickstarter campaign and left Chicago to follow our dream of helping others while living and working on the road. We have now traveled over 14,000 miles, downed more than 600 cups of coffee, visited 10 national parks, and 8 world-class climbing destinations. We have also helped more than 20 individuals and non-profits in 10 states by designing their logos, books, posters, updating their websites, and photographing their work.

Last Wednesday we invited our Chicago-area friends to come tour the Egg, see a slideshow of our travels, and lift a glass to help us kick off a second year of free-range design. With more than one hundred people in attendance, and many others donating online from home, we raised $3,120 in just one evening. As we move towards our goal of $24,000 by November 1, there is still work to do. But the success of this first fundraising event was critical for gaining momentum and renewing our confidence in the idea of community-funded design.

Making LA

Making LA

Los Angleles, CA—How we ended up in a room filled with some of the brightest minds in Los Angeles—from the Deputy Mayor to Moby—was the result of a chance meeting under a boulder in Utah.

While we were climbing in Joe’s Valley, we ran into Orange County native Alvin Kim (check out his blog—you’ll be inspired). Alvin’s sister Christine was one of the organizers of a new event bringing together “creative leaders from across Los Angeles to share best practices and investigate new ways to make their burgeoning civic, architectural or design projects a reality.” Christine reached out to us after hearing the DesignEgg story from her brother and we soon had an invitation to the Making LA Conference, the culmination of a year-long programming series organized by de LaB, an LA-based nonprofit with support from the National Endowment for the Arts.
